Background of the Study
Family decision-making is a complex process influenced by cultural, social, and economic factors, with gender roles playing a pivotal role in determining the distribution of power within households. In Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, traditional patriarchal norms have long dictated that men hold primary decision-making authority, while women are often relegated to subordinate roles (Ibrahim, 2023). However, evolving socio-economic dynamics and increased educational opportunities are challenging these conventions, leading to shifts toward more egalitarian family dynamics (Okeke, 2024). This study examines the extent to which traditional gender roles influence family decision-making processes and how emerging trends are reshaping these dynamics. The research also investigates the impact of these roles on family cohesion, economic management, and overall household well-being, providing insights into the changing landscape of domestic power relations (Uduak, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite noticeable shifts in gender dynamics, traditional gender roles continue to dominate family decision-making in Oredo, limiting women's agency and participation (Chukwu, 2023). This entrenched system often results in unequal distribution of household responsibilities and may negatively affect overall family welfare. The persistence of such roles poses challenges to achieving gender equality and empowering women within the family setting. This study aims to critically assess the impact of traditional gender roles on family decision-making, identifying the factors that hinder progress toward more equitable practices (Udo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

To evaluate the influence of gender roles on family decision-making.

To assess the impact of these roles on household welfare.

To recommend strategies for promoting equitable decision-making in families.

Research Questions:

How do traditional gender roles shape family decision-making in Oredo?

What impact do these roles have on household dynamics and welfare?

What measures can encourage more egalitarian decision-making practices?

Research Hypotheses:

Traditional gender roles significantly influence family decision-making.

Unequal decision-making power negatively affects household welfare.

Interventions promoting gender equality will lead to more balanced family decisions.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the influence of gender roles on family decision-making and their impact on household welfare. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders seeking to promote gender equality and empower women within the family context in Oredo (Okafor, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Gender roles: Socially constructed roles and behaviors expected of men and women.

Family decision-making: The process by which family members collectively reach decisions.

Empowerment: The process of increasing individuals’ capacity to make choices and effect change.
